A&P Module 1 : Biology Review
Lesson 1 : What is Science?Standard(s): SC.912.N.1.1 Define a problem based on a specific body of knowledge. SC.912.N.1.2 Describe and explain what characterizes science and its methods.
Objective(s): (1) Differentiate between phenomena that are scientific and things that are not; (2) Explain the criteria for categorizing phenomena as science (Consistent, Observable, Natural, Predictable, Testable, and Tentative). (3) Demonstrate understanding of the steps involved in the scientific method and the purpose of each component. Essential Question: What allows individuals to be able to distinguish the difference between science and non-science? How is a scientific investigation carried out? Vocabulary: consistent, observable, natural, predictable, testable, tentative, observation, inference, hypothesis, experiment, control, variables, independent variable, dependent variable, analysis, conclusion, scientific theory |
Lesson 2 : Chemical Basis of LifeStandard(s): SC.912.L.18.1 Matter and Energy Transformations: Describe the basic molecular structures and primary functions of the four major categories of biological macromolecules. SC.912. L.18.11 Matter and Energy Transfer: Explain the role of enzymes as catalysts that lower the activation energy of biochemical reactions. Identify factors, such as pH and temperature, and their effect on enzyme activity.
Objective(s): (1) Explain the similarities and differences between the molecular structures and primary functions of the four categories of macromolecules; (2) Identify examples of the four categories of macromolecules. (3) Explain how the activation energy of a biochemical reaction changes in the presence of an enzyme. (4) Describe the factors that can have an effect on enzyme activity. (5) Analyze the effects of the factors on enzyme activity. Essential Question: How do the different macromolecules meet our cellular needs? Why are the actions of enzymes important for cellular function? Vocabulary: amino acid, carbohydrate, covalent bond, fatty acid, glycerol, inorganic, lipid, monomer, nucleic acid, organic, polymer, protein, activation energy, exothermic reaction, endothermic reaction, catalyst, enzyme, substrate, active site, denature |
Lesson 3 : Cell Cycle and Cell GrowthStandard(s): SC.912.L.16.8 Heredity and Reproduction: Explain the relationship between mutation, cell cycle, and uncontrolled cell growth potentially resulting in cancer.
Objective(s): (1) Explain the major stages of the cell cycle and cellular division (mitosis); (2) Describe specific events occurring in each of the phases of cellular division (mitosis) including cytokinesis; (3) Explain how cellular division (mitosis) functions to form new cells and maintain complex organisms; (4) Explain how a mutation might cause the cell cycle to be altered to allow for uncontrolled cell growth; (5) Relate the development of cancer (uncontrolled growth) to mutations that affect the proteins that regulate the cell cycle. Essential Question: What can you infer about how cell division in a normal cell compares to cell division in a cancer cell? Vocabulary: cell cycle, chromosome, cytokinesis, mitosis, interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, mutation, cancer |
